Difference between real and fake emeralds

South America and Columbia are the largest exporters of emeralds worldwide. Our neighboring countries, such as Afghanistan and Pakistan, are also producers of emeralds. But Columbian Emeralds are the purest and most valuable ones.

There is a widespread use of fake and synthetic emeralds. As a result, it is difficult for the average person to know to Difference Between Real And Fake Emeralds.

Because these are made in labs. from green stones or chemical compositions. These laboratory-made stones are very much similar to the naturally derived emerald. They even have some flaws to make them natural, like the real ones. But you will find them at a cheaper price than the natural ones. These are generally larger and look better than the natural ones.

To understand the Difference Between Real And Fake Emeralds, you need to know their type:

Natural Emerald :

Genuine Emerald Stone is created within the earth over a long period and is among the best quality emerald.

Synthetic Emerald:

They are created in a laboratory or are man-made. You have to understand the fact that these are not fakes since they are made from the same chemical composition as natural and genuine earth. They have the same value as the real ones. But not in astrological terms.

Imitation Emerald:

Imitation emeralds are alternative materials, such as glass or a lesser-valued look-alike gemstone that are used to mimic the appearance of an emerald. Some popular emerald imitations are peridot, garnet, different kinds of beryl, and chromium diopside. These can vary depending on the material. Green glass having a chemical composition comparable to emerald is referred to as “ferrous emerald” or “Ferrer’s emerald.” To improve the hue of a faint real emerald, the rear is sometimes painted with green lacquer.

Real Emerald vs. Fake Emerald;

Difference Between Real And Fake Emeralds

  • If you will put natural gemstone against natural lighting, you can see all the imperfections, while in synthetic one, there are so many perfections that you may think it’s real, but they are not.
  •  If you find inclusion that is in only one direction and does not have multiple types of inclusion, then this is certainly fake emerald. But if it had inclusion in all directions then it is real emerald.
  • If you will put a real emerald on the flashlight of your phone, you would see the very bright light coming out of it in green color, and you can also see the imperfection in it. But if you put fake emerald on the flashlight it will not show a very bright color.
  • You can see, greyish/ black tint in real good quality emerald, they have inclusion in it. which is missing in the fake emerald.
  • In real emerald, you won’t find any big cutting sign, which is present in the fake one.
  • You will find, color zoning and feather inclusion in real emeralds which is not there in the synthetic emerald. Real emerald has angular color zoning. This means, that when you see it in the zoom, you will find out that it is darker in color somewhere and lighter somewhere and you will not find such inclusion in the fake emerald.
  • You can see the tiny black spots and needle-like inclusion in the real emerald.
  • Emerald has fingerprint inclusion, which you can see by zooming, which is not in fake emerald.
  • You can see a little bubble-like structure in the real emerald.
  •  You can find wispy veil inclusions in the synthetic gemstone which is not there in the natural emerald.
  • There is slight yellow color wave inclusion in synthetic emerald which is not there in the real emerald. You will find, needle-like inclusion in the fake emerald as well, but they are a little thick than needles, and are filled with bubbles.
  • Real emerald is slighter harder, but softer than ruby but in a fake one, you will find it even harder than ruby.
  • Real emerald has an angular corner, while fake one has a round corner and they do not show a crisp corner.
  • Real emerald has 7.5 to 8.0 Mohs hardness, while glass has 5.5 and fluorite has 4.0.
  • Real emerald has lots of imperfection in them, while the fake one is flawless, you will hardly find any inclusion
  • Take any clear food oil, and put your emerald in oil, and if you see the base of the emerald in darker green color and the rest of the material is transparent, then it quartz or glass-filled fake emerald.

To confirm the Difference Between Real And Fake Emeralds, Try to examine the:

1#Colour Of Emerald

Natural emerald varies in color. It can be both light and darker in shade.

And even synthetic and fake ones are the same color. But if you look closely, you will find that fake emeralds are the ones in which there is a slight tint of any lighter color, such as yellow, then this is probably a fake one.

If you light the real emerald, it will not show you any color flashes, but the fake one will. Natural environments are very less likely to get caught on fire.

2#Sharpness Of Emerald

If the emerald has too many sides, try to see its edges. Natural emeralds are hard, thus you won’t find any sign of wear on the real one.

Since some emeralds (the synthetic ones) are made from softer materials such as glass, their edges become less sharp over some time and they may look torn and used.

3#Clarity Of Emerald

Natural environments do not have flawless clarity due to natural flaws in their structure.

You should be able to spot lines, bubbles, crystals, and other faults in such a stone if you examine it closely, particularly with a loupe.

Artificially made imitations, in contrast to natural emeralds, usually appear too beautiful and clean. Also, if you are getting them at a cheaper price, then it is probably a fake.
